The easiest way to buy a cheap used car is to come in with your research done. Here is the process:

1. Research a good purchase price at Edmunds.com
2. Check out ratings and safety information
3. Do a FREE carfax search based on the vehicle VIN number. The free search will tell you a number of items appearing in the carfax report. If the car is only a few years old it should have a low number such as 4 or 5 if it has not been in any accidents.

4. When you go into the dealership you can make them provide you with the full carfax printouts at no cost to you.
5. Do a search of car dealership web sites in your area (some may be linked off of Edmunds.com or other web sites. The listing will usually say the dealership name. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT: You should go to the direct website and do a search after finding a local place that has the car you want around the price you want.)
6. Once on the car dealer website (Bobs Car Sales should be bobscarsales.com), do a search to find at least 4-6 of the low mileage, low carfax number, good priced vehicle and PRINT IT OUT INCLUDING THE VIN NUMBER. (it should have the web address and logo on it of the car dealership)
7. What you are hoping for is that the printout will show a low price that is from a sale or outdated on their web site but the printout will force them to honor it.
8. When you go to the dealership, ask to see any of the cars with the following VIN numbers (don’t give any more info yet).
9. They should have at least one, if not then leave.
10. The sticker price will definately be much higher. Do not worry.
11. Do your test drive etc and then first sit down to talk about your trade in/financing. DO NOT REVEAL YOUR PRINTOUT YET.
12. After the financing and trade in value is squared away it is time to talk price. Insist on this order.
13. Now produce your printout (it should have the web address and logo on it) and insist they honor this price.

That is it. You have just purchased a cheap used car.
