Today started out a positive day for Wall Street with many good earnings. IBM reported quarter earnings that were better than expected. eBay also had better than expected results for the first quarter. Oil prices continued to rise above $115 a barrel. The Dow Jones Industrial Average started up 256.80 points up 2.08 percent for the day. The NASDAQ started up 64.07 points up 2.80 percent for the day. Can this momentum continue through the week?

Google shocked everyone today. In an astounding move, Google had a 1st quarter profit up 30 percent. Google stock rose over seventeen percent in after hours trading. This is a surprising turn of events given the downturned economy. More than half of the revenue came from outside the United States of America. This is the first time this has happened for Google. Although there are fewer clicks, advertisers seem to be willing to pay more for them.

There are few things in this world that I love more than my kids. I have raised them from the beginning and happily watched every little achievement and shuddered at the smallest of injuries. Teaching my teenage son to drive was one of the most stressful and frustrating things I have ever done. Many a time I had to bite my tongue so hard to keep from yelling that it almost led to tears. I kept saying to myself “It is an important skill. He needs to know how to drive.”. But know that he knows how to drive I am deathly afraid to let him go anywhere in the car. Let’s Talk about Wachovia. Now I do not have any thing in particular against Wachovia. I just don’t like their name. And I do not like their commercials. And there are no branches near me (even though they are the 4th largest bank in the United States). And Wachovia just posted a $393 million first quarter loss. Wachovia immediately is cutting their dividend and seeking cash. (I do not own this stock). I do not know. I just don’t like them.

Stocks began a slide today again on negative news. Wachovovia Posted a 1st Quarter loss and intends to raise seven billion dollars. Food costs are the easiest indentifyer of inflation as food is getting more expensive at the fastest rate in seventeen years. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished down 23.36 points down .19 percent for the day. The Nasdaq was down 14.42 points down .63 percent for the day.
