The stock market performed well today from the recent Fed cut and increased speculation. There were many good deals to be had. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 207 points up 1.67 percent for the day. The NASDAQ was up 1.74 percent for the day. Many of my positions gained today. We will see what friday brings.

Wow this is crazy. Google the infallible, Google the unbeatable, missed their fourth quarter profits target. Analysts and everyone was disappointed. Maybe that is because Google gave out $223 million or so to their employees in stock awards. Google stock has fallen 20 percent this month and another 8 percent today in after hours trading. This is a bad sign for Google which recently announced they are changing several agreements including adsense referral commissions and google tools, application pack commissions.

In this sluggish economy layoffs are becoming more frequent. As during many recessions the number of small businesses increase as does enrollment in university degree programs. Whether for a first time degree, post graduate degree, or a degree in a different career field, the colleges always do well during a recession. My concern is really with the tightening loan restrictions.

The Fed cut interest rates today half a point and the market responded before taking profit and bringing things back to 0. Amazon doubled their Fourth Quarter Profit as well. I also took profit liquidating much of my holdings. I still hold Walmart, JP Morgan Chase and several others. I will post updated holdings shortly.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was surprisingly up today. Up 176.72 points up 1.45 percent for the day with the NASDAQ up 23.71 points up 1.02 percent. The Fed is expected to meet tomorrow and cut rates again. I am slightly more pessemistic. New home sales are falling by record amounts and American Express reported ten percent lower profit. My holdings continue to fluctuate and I am considering modifying my investments.

Over the weekend International markets fell after a poor day in the United States markets on Friday. I tend to agree with the negative outlook particularly looking at the increasingly negative housing data that even a US stimulus package and further rate cuts can not prevent the US markets from souring. Increased uncertantiy in international markets is very bad news. Verizon and American Express are expected to post earnings on Monday along with other companies.
